Canadian Firearms Safety Course
In order to purchase a firearm, everyone must first pass the testing portion of the Canadian Firearms Safety Course before applying for their Firearms Possession and Acquisition Licence. The necessary courses and tests are conducted here at Shooter's Choice in our convenient classroom facilities. We use a comfortable, modern classroom complete with video and overhead projectors, as well as an extensive array of disabled firearms to make this course a pleasant experience. We do regret that this classroom is not wheelchair accessible.
There are two different Canadian Firearms Safety Courses -
one for non-restricted firearms and one for restricted firearms. The
non-restricted course is required to purchase rifles, shotguns and ammunition. If you wish to
get into handgun shooting, you will need to take both the non-restricted course and
the restricted course. You only need to pass the tests for your qualifications, however
we recommend that those with limited firearms knowledge also take the course
portion as well. As most of the people applying here for restricted status are
also joining our shooting club, we are offering a streamlined version of the
restricted testing. The Restricted Safety Education Course is mandatory for those who
wish to shoot handguns, and it is a very comprehensive course that overlaps the
Canadian Firearms Restricted Safety Course. It is also a live-fire course. All
of our students are taking the Restricted Safety Education Course, and writing both
its exam and the CFRSC exam at the end of their training.
Courses are scheduled on a first come - first served basis
based on the date of your application. Applications are available at the
front counter of Shooter's Choice, or may be downloaded below. Complete the application and return it
with the appropriate fees (listed below), and you will be immediately put on the waiting
list for the next course. Courses are not scheduled beforehand, and
it is NOT possible to tell you when the next one is coming up. When
enough applications have been collected for a course, the next course will be
booked. The people on the waiting list will then be telephoned concerning the
dates and times for the course. If you are on the list but cannot make the
schedule when phoned, you will be kept on the list for the next course. We are
conducting non-restricted courses on an average schedule of 1-2 per month.
Courses are three nights in length, usually held over the
course of one week, generally starting at 6:30pm or 7:00pm and will finish at
9:30-10:00pm. The 30 minute exams are scheduled for later in the week, with
your choice of
exam times.
